Divorce, a legally sanctioned dissolution of marriage, is a life event that can have profound psychological effects on individuals, particularly women. In many cultures, including Nigerian society, marriage is considered a cornerstone of emotional and social well-being, and the dissolution of this bond can trigger significant emotional distress. Women, in particular, face unique challenges post-divorce, such as emotional instability, social stigma, financial hardship, and, in many cases, the responsibility of raising children on their own (Vasilenko et al., 2024). Research has shown that women tend to experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues following a divorce compared to men, often due to social expectations, economic dependency, and familial roles (Smith & Holmes, 2023).
In Nigeria, divorce rates have been on the rise, though divorce remains a culturally sensitive issue. Federal Medical Centre in Lokoja, Kogi State, provides psychiatric care to women experiencing various mental health challenges, including those stemming from marital separation. However, the specific psychological effects of divorce on women's mental health in Lokoja remain under-explored. Understanding the consequences of divorce on women's mental health is critical for improving the mental health care and support services offered to women in post-divorce situations.
While divorce is increasingly prevalent in Kogi State, there is limited research examining its psychological impact on women. This study seeks to explore how divorce influences women's mental health, including aspects such as emotional well-being, stress, and social adjustment, with a focus on patients at Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja.
The study will focus on women who have experienced divorce and are receiving psychiatric care at Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja. The study will be limited to psychological effects and does not examine the financial or social impacts of divorce. A limitation of the study may be the challenge of accessing a sufficiently diverse sample of women and possible biases in self-reporting mental health symptoms.
